40th Anniversary of Independence of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas
"On July 10th we commemorate and celebrate 40 years of independence from Britain. It is a time to pay our respects to our pioneering forefathers for their strength of spirit, their unfailing courage and their indomitable commitment to their vision - a vision that culminated in "The Commonwealth of The Bahamas" being born.
Independence Day is not only a day of reflection. It is also a day to pay tribute and to express our gratitude for our freedom still upheld today. It is a day to look forward to-- bright with opportunities still to be explored and attained.
As you celebrate this Special Independence Day I hope you will take the time to give thanks for the great advances that have been made since 1973. Much may have indeed changed over the past 40 years.
My heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Bahamas High Commission, The Friends of the Bahamas, The Bahamas Host Association and members of the Independence Planning Committee for organising these special events to mark this special anniversary. I thank you for the wonderful support that you have given me over these few short months as your High Commissioner. It has been a joy to work with you all.
On behalf of my wife, Dawne, we wish you a magical Independence Day and a year ahead lit by hope, grace, freedom and integrity.
Happy Birthday Bahamas!
Eldred "Ed" Bethel
The Commonwealth of The Bahamas"
In April of this year, High Commissioner Bethel addressed this letter to all Bahamian nationals in our jurisdiction. Our inaugural event, the Cultural Evening on 15 May 2013, was a great success and we thank everyone who came out and took part!
Unfortunately the proposed June event refered to in the letter was not able to be held.
All Bahamian nationals and friends are invited to join the High Commissioner and staff in attending "Evensong" at Westminister Abbey on Tuesday, 9 July 2013, at 5pm. Guests should be seated by 4:45pm. After the Service, light refreshments will be served at Bahamas House.
Additionally, the High Commissioner will host a reception on 17 July 2013 at a venue in central London. Bahamian nationals wishing to attend this event should ensure that the High Commission has your postal and/or email addresses, as admittance will be by invitation only.
Finally, the High Commission is pleased to share the following messages from His Excellency Sir Arthur Foulkes GCMG, Governor-General; the Rt Hon Perry Christie, M.P, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance; and the Hon Frederick Mitchell, M.P., Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration.
