H.E. Eldred Bethel, High Commissioner and Permanent Representative to the IMO, paid a courtesy call on Mr. Koji Sekimizu, Secretary-General of the IMO, on Tuesday 5 March 2013. The High Commissioner was accompanied by Cdr. Davy Rolle, Director & CEO, of The Bahamas Maritime Authority who presented the Secretary-General with The Bahamas' assessed contribution to the IMO for 2013. As the fourth largest ship register in the world, The Bahamas' annual assessed contribution is in excess of one million GBP Sterling, making The Bahamas one of the largest contributors to the UN Organization.

The High Commissioner and Secretary-General spoke on a number of matters including management reform, piracy, greenhouse gas emissions from ships and ballast water management.  Gratitude was also expressed to the Secretary-General for the IMO's assistance in facilitating the "National Maritime Workshop" held for senior civil servants at the Grand Lucayan Hotel, Freeport, Grand Bahama, 6 to 8 February 2013.  The workshop was organised jointly by the Ministry of Transport and Aviation and the IMO under the theme "Improving The Standard for Implementation and Enforcement of the IMO's Mandatory Instruments".
